A Meadow Lake native will get his shot to make the NHL this summer.

Goaltender Kristofer Westblom will be heading to Voorhees, New Jersey on July 6 for the Philadelphia Flyers Prospect Conditioning Camp.

“I am very happy to have a chance to show a strong organization that I can play at the next level,” said Westblom. “These thing’s don’t come around everyday so I am going to make the most of this opportunity.”

Westblom spent the last three seasons with Acadia University’s Acadia Axemen and graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree.

He posted a 2.95 goals against average over his time with the Axemen, was a first team AUS All-star during the 2009-10 season and was named the university’s Athlete of the Year in 2010.

“There is no doubt he has the ability to someday reach his goal of playing in the National Hockey League,” said Acadia head coach Darren Burns. “It’s great to see a team with such a storied tradition give him the chance to prove himself.”

Westblom hopes to catch the attention of Philadelphia’s coaching staff and scouts at the camp and will begin to prepare in Kelowna, British Columbia this week.
