Meadow Lake in the running for Kraft Celebration Tour

By Rhonda Cooper

Meadow Lake is one of 20 finalists competing in this year’s Kraft Community Celebration Event. At stake is the right to host a live telecast of TSN’s Sports Centre and a monetary prize of $25,000.

Meadow Lake resident Linda Harman submitted a 4,000 word essay outlining how the award would not only positively impact the local sports community but also promote healthy and active lifestyles. With the city set to host the 2012 Summer Games, Harman chose selected Lions Park as her focus. Citing its many uses, she indicated a number of areas that require upgrading as the community prepares for the arrival of over 1,800 athletes, coaches and fans to the city.

On July 1 TSN announced its top 20 selections for the third annual Cross Canada Kraft Celebration tour.

“I submitted the nomination a few weeks ago, and it was just announced we made the top 20 – out of 339 entries!” Harman stated, “My hope is that we can rally the community to get behind our nomination and go online and vote!”

Meadow Lake’s bid has proceeded through the first two rounds of judging on the merit of Harman’s essay. A total of 29 Saskatchewan communities were nominated with Meadow Lake and Kyle paired against one another and Estevan competing with Swan River, Man. Now it is in the hands of the general public to determine the outcome of the head-to-head online vote between Meadow Lake and the southwest community of Kyle, where they’re hoping to complete upgrades and keep the rink doors open. The community with the most votes wins. Voting is unlimited and open to everyone no matter where they reside.

Meadow Lake supporters have only 24 hours from noon (Eastern Standard Time) Friday, July 15 to Saturday, July 16  to make every click of the mouse count.
