Two area businesses on list of province’s elite

Co-op, Meadow Lake Mechanical Pulp make Top 100

Two area businesses have been identified as belonging to the top 100 in the province.

In the annual Top 100 Saskatchewan Companies, released by the StarPhoenix last week, Meadow Lake Mechanical Pulp was named the 26th best company in Saskatchewan, while the Meadow Lake Co-op came in at 88.

The list is based on revenue, with the pulp mill’s revenue coming in at $230,059,000 and the Meadow Lake Co-op registering $45,573,000.

While he wasn’t aware of the list, Ed Roste, vice-president of operations for the pulp mill, said being ranked that highly shows the importance of the mill.

“I think it shows the economic value or economic input that the mill has in Saskatchewan in general, not just Meadow Lake,” he noted.

However, he noted it doesn’t have an impact on the mill’s business, because it mostly exports out of province.

“It’s gratifying to say that we have that kind of impact,” Roste said. “It’s really letting the people of Saskatchewan know what the impact of our business is in terms of creating jobs and economic activity.”

Meanwhile, Len Labossiere of the Meadow Lake Co-op said the company is happy with its place on the list.

“We’re proud to be right up there within a very elite group,” he said. “It indicates the Co-op is well positioned within it’s market.

“We hope to maintain our position.”

He noted at the end of the day, the Co-op’s place on the list is due to the support of its members.

Co-op president Richard Reed added it’s awesome for the company.

“I think you’ve got to credit the people in the Co-op that make that happen,” he said. “That’s what it’s all about, having a strong membership and a strong team that works toward a common goal.”

Viterra topped the list again this year, with Federated Co-operatives placing second and Potash Corp rounding out the top three.
