Female Mustangs split weekend games

Playing twice on the weekend, the Meadow Lake Peewee Female Mustangs fell 7-5 to Kerrobert on Saturday, but regrouped on Sunday to down Vermilion 15-0 at the Meadow Lake Arena.

In Sunday’s game, the Meadow Lake squad started slow as they were behind 4-1 after the first period. However, the team got on the scoreboard three times in the middle frame to Kerrobert’s two. In the third, the two teams traded single markers for a 7-5 Kerrobert win.

Firing a hat trick in the game for Meadow Lake was sniper Jessica Mirasty while Shanelle Norman and Holly Abrahamson chipped in with singles.

Against Vermilion, who came with only 10 skaters, Meadow Lake easily defeated them 15-0 with netminder Cassia Anderson recording the shutout.

Up front it was Erica Lai and Holly Abrahamson leading the way with four goals apiece while Jessica Mirasty added a pair. Singles went to Dayna Henry, Kayleen Oftedal, Lacey Waterman, Makayla Hritzuk and Shanelle Norman.

Next action for the peewee Mustangs is next Saturday when they host the Lloydminster Wizard Wells. Game time is 12:30 pm.

Bantam Huskies keep it close

The Meadow Lake Bantam Female Huskies started out their season last weekend with two losses at home at the Meadow Lake Arena.

In their first game Saturday against Lakeland (Bonnyville/Cold Lake), Meadow Lake were outscored 6-5.

Trailing 3-2 after the first period and then 6-4 after the second, the Huskies made it interesting midway through the third when they came within one goal of tying the game, but the Lakeland squad hung on for the victory.

Scoring Meadow Lake’s five goals came off the sticks of Shanae Weeseekase, Alyssa Alger, Chelsey Burnett, Kenessa Derocher and Sahayle Norman.

On Sunday against Lloydminster, it was another close contest for much of the game, but in the end the visitors grabbed the win 8-3.

The Huskies trailed 2-1 after the first, but tied it up 3-3 after 40 minutes of play. In the third, however, Lloydminster solidified their win by scoring five unanswered goals.

Alyssa Alger netted a pair of goals for Meadow Lake while Renessa Derocher added a single in a losing cause.

Next weekend the Bantam Huskies will again host two games – Saturday at 3 pm against Viking and then Sunday at 12:30 pm against Hughenden.
