Members of the Meadow Lake Figure Skating Club stroked, spun and jumped their way through the club’s annual grassroots seminar held Nov. 25 at the Meadow Lake Arena.

“It is really exciting to have Dale (Hazell) here,” said coach Janelle Weber. “He is a very busy man as he is the coach of the provincial team.”

A variety of one hour sessions were held throughout the day, with Hazell working with about 23 of the club’s skaters on enhancing their techniques to elevate their skating levels.

Jade Opekokew-Blenkinsop, Kinsey Walsh and Chloe Ludvigson have all be talent-identified by the provincial association. Lara Van De Venter is a member of the provincial skater development team with senior skaters Jace Adamson and Taiya Paylor preparing for upper level competitions.

“I started skating when I was four in Loon Lake,” said Adamson, now 16. “I moved to the Meadow Lake club when I was 10.”

Adamson competed at the Eastern/Western Challenge competition last year in the pre-novice division. This year he will return to the competition, but as a novice and will be skating in Regina, December 3 and 4.

“I hope to do better than  I did last year,” he said. His goals for this year include having a stable double axel and at least one triple jump in his repertoire.

At 14, Paylor has been skating since she was three. She is competing at the pre-novice level and is looking to add a double axel and spins of higher degrees of difficulties.

Meadow Lake has one of the largest clubs in the area. There are 16 seniors, seven juniors and intermediates and 43 CanSkate skaters. Jackie Gilroyd, Dawn Paylor, Stephanie Walsh and Janelle Weber are the club’s coaches.
