King enjoying NHL playoffs

The NHL playoffs may prove to be Dwight King’s crowning glory.

King, a native of Meadow Lake, is on to the next round of NHL playoffs after his team, the Los Angeles Kings, upset the Vancouver Canucks in the run for the Stanley Cup.

Left winger King was called up from the L.A. King’s farm team, the Manchester Monarchs, in early February, and has played in all six playoff games to date.

Los Angeles’ overtime clinching goal April 22 had King and Jarret Stoll break in on the Vancouver netminder with Stoll scoring the winner.

King says nothing compares to being called up to the big leagues, especially during an intense time like the playoffs.

“It’s obviously exciting to have the opportunity to get called up to the NHL,” King said, from his home in L.A. “It’s definitely the time of the year when you want to be playing. It’s just a thrill to have the opportunity to play.”

King admits he was a bit surprised to hear the phone ring with the request to replace an injured player. But for King, it’s the chance to experience firsthand the type of hockey environment which goes with the Stanley Cup playoffs.

“This is my first time in the playoffs, so it just adds to the whole experience,” he said. “Playoff games are a little more intense and fast-paced. I played six games last year with the Kings. The goal is to bring the Cup home.”

King said the team has a good momentum going, but they have not closed it off yet.

King, the youngest of four, remembers participating in minor hockey growing up alongside his sisters, Danene and Dayna, and brother DJ. He calls his brother one of his hockey mentors.

“It was definitely my dream,” he said. “The older you get, the more ways you can reach your goal.”

And as far as he is concerned, however, home is where the heart is.

“I definitely miss home, and always come back to visit,” he added. “I spend at least four months of the year back there.”

King was drafted 109th overall in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft by the Los Angeles Kings. He spent a total of five seasons with the Lethbridge Hurricanes (from 2004-2005, and from 2008-2009) in the Western Hockey League (WHL).

The L.A. Kings now play the St. Louis Blues beginning this week in round two of the 2012 Stanley Cup playoffs.
