Tim Hortons to open in Meadow Lake
by Phil Ambroziak
You’ve always got time for Tim Hortons – even if it’s taken a while to get here.
That’s what Meadow Lake and area residents are likely to soon discover thanks to a decision city council was expected to make during its regular meeting held last night (April 14). While the meeting occurred after this week’s press deadline, when contacted earlier in the day, Meadow Lake mayor Gary Vidal said he expected council would have no issues approving a development permit application from the Alberta-based Canalta Real Estate Services to build a free standing Tim Hortons restaurant on Highway 7 between Ace Lumber and Eagle Creek GM.
“This is an exciting day for our community,” remarked Meadow Lake mayor Gary Vidal. “This is something people have looked forward to for a long time. For years, people have always been asking why we don’t have a Tim Hortons. They won’t have to ask that question ever again.”
According to the application, construction of the 2,700-square-foot restaurant is scheduled to begin May 1 and be completed by Sept. 15. And, as with any new business, is also expected to create a number of jobs.
“We are thrilled when people want to make investments in our community and this will be a significant investment,” Vidal said.
While a spokesperson from Canalta could not be contacted by press time, the application – which is attributed to the company’s assistant controller Robert Visser – states there are other buildings listed on the master site plan, but none of these have yet been finalized. There has also been no official indication as to who will be the local Tim Hortons’ franchisee.
“I’ve heard rumours, but we haven’t dealt directly with anyone local,” Vidal said. “Essentially, they (Canalta) would provide the facility and would have a franchisee to operate the business for them. But, I assume – from what I see here – they do have someone in place… There’s nothing in this application I’m aware of that would prevent this from happening.”
