Child found after becoming lost in woods

Members of the Loon Lake RCMP detachment recently took part in a search for a missing toddler at Murphy Lake.

Three-year-old Cheyenne Ring disappeared briefly on the afternoon of July 12, resulting in an intensive search of the area by Loon Lake RCMP Cst. Lesley Somers and Cst. Brandon Barton, as well as friends, family and nearby residents.

“According to the report that was filed, she was missing for 30-45 minutes,” noted Loon Lake RCMP Sgt. Shawn Carter. “We were given a description of what she was wearing and a police dog was called in, but she was eventually discovered by her grandfather before the dog arrived at the scene.”

The girl was unharmed, but according to Ring’s great-grandmother, Edna Britton, was found more than two kilometres from the cabin at which her family was staying.

“We have two lots at Murphy Lake,” Britton explained. “There is a cabin on one and a place for tents and trailers on the other. Both are separated by spruce trees.”

Britton said Ring followed her father to the side where they were camping and became lost when told to return to other family members at the cabin.

“It was only her second time being there, so she took a wrong turn and ended up on a nearby trail,” Britton added.

Meanwhile, Carter said people in general should be extra careful when camping with young children.

“You should always keep an eye on your children, especially in our neck of the woods because they’re are bears and other creatures out there,” he said. “In this case it may have just been a matter of miscommunication, but you should always be aware of your surroundings.”
